In the past, the subjects that interested me were to be found in the marginal sector or in smaller forms of society that in modern society try to resist the stamp of "the average". Here, my preference was always for people who are strongly preoccupied with their personalities, their appearance, their lifestyles and the guarding of their culture and values: punks, gypsies, homeless people, prostitution, transsexuality, transvestism, minorities in Vietnam, Irian Jaya, Laos, Kurdistan, Syria and the jungle in Borneo and in Sarawak. It is certainly not the intention of my work to pass judgment or even to take a cautious position regarding certain social phenomena. It is only to record an event as objectively (?) as possible and then show a simple testimony of it.
In addition, over the years, through my work with large format cameras, my attention has grown to old, analog techniques and darkroom work. Currently, all my attention is focused on daguerreotype. The fascinating thing here is that as a photographer you can determine all the quality yourself ... from the silver plate as the recording material, the light sensitivity to the development and finishing of the image.
After reading some Latin texts and sayings in 2022, the idea for the series of still life "memento mori" was born.

In het verleden waren de onderwerpen die mij interesseerden te vinden in de marginale sector of in kleinere samenlevingsvormen die zich in de moderne samenleving proberen te verzetten tegen het stempel van 'het gemiddelde'. Hier ging mijn voorkeur altijd uit naar mensen die sterk bezig zijn met hun persoonlijkheid, hun uiterlijk, hun levensstijl en het bewaken van hun cultuur en waarden: punks, zigeuners, daklozen, prostitutie, transseksualiteit, travestie, minderheden in Vietnam, Irian Jaya, Laos, Koerdistan, Syrië en de jungle in Borneo en in Sarawak. Het is zeker niet de bedoeling van mijn werk om een oordeel uit te spreken of zelfs maar een voorzichtig standpunt in te nemen ten aanzien van bepaalde maatschappelijke fenomenen. Het gaat er alleen om een gebeurtenis zo objectief (?) mogelijk vast te leggen en er vervolgens een eenvoudige getuigenis van te laten zien.
Daarnaast is mijn aandacht door de jaren heen, door mijn studiowerk met grootformaat camera's, gegroeid naar oude, analoge technieken en dokawerk. Momenteel gaat al mijn aandacht uit naar daguerreotypie. Het boeiende hierbij is dat je als fotograaf zelf alle kwaliteit kunt bepalen...van de zilveren plaat als opnamemateriaal, de lichtgevoeligheid tot de ontwikkeling en afwerking van het beeld.
Na het lezen van enkele Latijnse teksten en spreuken in 2022 ontstond het idee voor de serie stillevens "memento mori".

Dans le passé, les sujets qui m'intéressaient se trouvaient dans le secteur marginal ou dans des formes plus petites de société qui tentent de résister au stigmate de la « moyenne » dans la société moderne. Ici, ma préférence a toujours été pour les gens qui sont conscients de leur personnalité, de leur apparence, de leur mode de vie et de la sauvegarde de leur culture et de leurs valeurs : punks, gitans, sans-abri, prostitution, transsexualité, travestissement, minorités au Vietnam, Irian Jaya, Laos, Kurdistan, Syrie, Bornéo et Sarawak. Dans mon travail, mon intention n'est pas de porter un jugement ou même de prendre une position prudente à l'égard de certains phénomènes sociaux. Il s'agit simplement d'enregistrer un événement le plus objectivement (?) possible et d'en montrer ensuite un simple témoignage.
Ces dernières années, grâce à mon travail en studio avec des appareils grand format, mon attention a été attirée sur les anciennes techniques analoges et le travail en chambre noire. Actuellement toute mon attention se porte sur les daguerréotypes. Ce qui est fascinant ici, c'est qu'en tant que photographe, vous pouvez déterminer vous-même toute la qualité... à commencer par la plaque d'argent comme matériau d'enregistrement, la sensibilité à la lumière jusqu'au développement et à la finition de l'image.
Après avoir lu quelques textes et dictons latins en 2022, l'idée de la série de natures mortes "memento mori" est née.
